Mykines, Mykines Island, Faroe Islands, June 2014 - The 'modern' cubed colored houses associated today with the Faroe Islands, actually stray architectually from the original turf covered Faroese stone houses. Developing slowly from lonely farmhouses to villages, the 'new' style houses were covered with corrugated sheeting and needed to be painted each year. Perhaps a cultural loss, the color gave individuality to the owners, as well as a lovely splash of color to the landscapes so often gray throughout the year. At the center of each village stands a church, many of them the traditional wooden churches with stone foundations, and a grass rooftop.
